Penelope Poppers - AR Art's Center Children's Theatre lighting portfolio
Penelope Poppers was the Lighting Designer and Master Electrician for all shows.
Cat In the Hat was the telling of a classic story for younger audiences. It was a wild show with a lot of physicality, movement and bright colors. This show takes place on a rainy day and this rain theme was throughout the lighting for the show. I hung 70 umbrellas over the house with lights in them to use for preshow and throughout the performance.
The story of Cinderella, but as a rock opera with a touch of drag. All the lights were exposed to give the look of an arena concert and we flew the electrics in even more for the final number.
Sleeping Beauty. The 'stone walls' on the left, upper center and right of the set were all translucent projection screens. The footage consisted of stars, various windows and some pre-recorded footage of characters for dream scenes. The show was called in QLab, which handled all the video, sound and also triggered our ETC Express for light cues. I setup the spinning wheel so it was remote controlled and the tip of it had a red LED for when she pricked her finger.
"Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type"
Robin Hood took place almost entirely in the woods, so we had a lot of texture all over the place. We created 4 translucent sliding panels (3 seen in the first photo), behind them I had instruments with scrollers and an unit on the floor for shadow play. There was a flown unit (photo 5) with RGB LED tape inside it for various looks.
Our telling of Pinocchio, but with a comic book/graphic novel approach, resulting in an incredibly colorful, dramatic show. The footlights & stage (seen best in photo 3) were lightboxes with LED tape inside.
